Caucasus. Plant Biodiversity between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea

Exhibition in the Botanic Garden and Botanical Museum Berlin: 16 May 2014 to 22 February 2015 - Press tour on 14 May 2014 at 10.30 a.m.
Wednesday 23. April 2014

"Caucasus. Plant Biodiversity between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea" is this year’s special exhibition in Berlin’s Botanic Garden and Botanical Museum. It showcases a “hotspot” of biodiversity in the northern hemisphere. A multitude of tightly knit habitats can be found in the region between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea: damp forests, lush meadows and tall forb communities, alpine rock & scree and peat bogs as well as steppes and semi-deserts. Many well-known garden plants originate from the Caucasus. Visitors explore trees in a time capsule, bellflowers, poppies and well-known economic plants such as vine, pomegranate and saffron crocus. They learn more about the diversity of Caucasian wild pears and how research projects can help to preserve this unique natural and cultural landscape and its genetic resources. The exhibition is open from 16 May 2014 to 22 February 2015. All exhibition texts are in German and English. A richly illustrated catalogue is being published, including all German and English texts.

The research focuses on three typical Caucasian habitat types: the Arcto-Tertiary forests, the xerophytic woodlands, and the high mountain ecosystems. Visitors are introduced to the on-going research activities in the region.
